Gold Coatings

Gold coatings are used by some customers for very specific applications.

  • Very high reflectivity
  • Very high conductivity
  • Possibility to solder to
  • Surface very delicate and can damage easily

We hold a very small stock of gold, it is not a standard product and normally we order coated materials specifically per order, so normal shipping times can be 3 -4 weeks and minimum quantities are much higher than other materials, so it is always advisable to speak to one of our technical sales team to discuss the availability in more detail before deciding on this option.

  • Material - White Soda Lime
  • Coating - Chrome / Gold
  • Coating Purity - 99.99% / 99.999%
  • Coating thickness - 100Å / 1000Å
  • Coating Uniformity - ±25 Å
  • Reflectivity - 90% @ 550nm
  • Optical Density - 3.2 @ 550nm

We typically use a thin chrome layer on the glass - only 150 Angstroms – to improve the adhesion of the gold to the plate. Next, it is overcoated with typically 1000 Angstroms of gold. Our coaters can increase the thickness to 1500 angstroms if required, but beyond that we do not have any experience and it becomes cost prohibitive. There is generally no coating over the top – so the top surface of the final part would be pure gold.

Our gold coated plates are normally supplied on a B270 white crown glass.
